MobileWALK
MobileWALK has been specially developed for pedestrian navigation. Information is provided in MobileWALK that is not important for navigation in your car. In particular, the system makes available information that is useful for everyday life.
GPS and Wireless LAN Localizing via awiloc®
In addition to the familiar localization option using GPS, MobileWALK can also calculate your location using Wireless LAN radio signals. This means that devices that do not have an integrated GPS module can also determine your location and use MobileWALK's location-dependent services. The advantage of using awiloc® for localizing is that it is ready for use within seconds, which means that you can determine your position without having to wait for a GPS signal. Apart from this, localizing also works inside buildings where it is not possible to receive GPS. The awiloc® technology has been developed by our cooperation partner Fraunhofer IIS.
Personal Tracking
MobileWALK offers special functions for pedestrians to record their own movements. In addition to Carfinder, there are also functions for joggers or tourists that allow them to view the route they have taken after a walk through town.
Indoor and Outdoor Navigation
Apart from the option of navigating outdoors, you can also use MobileWALK to navigate inside buildings. The use of awiloc® Wireless LAN location makes possible localizing inside buildings where GPS usually gives up the ghost and offers a very precise resolution in the range of a few metres.
Public Transportation
MobileWALK provides information about public transport (suburban railways, underground railways, trams, buses, etc.) This means that you can navigate to stops and use public transport to make your way through town.
Traffic
To make the transition between vehicle navigation and pedestrian navigation as smooth as possible, MobileWALK can access current traffic information. When doing this, the system uses familiar technology like TMC or TMC pro.
Social Networking
For social networking, MobileWALK offers you the option of finding the locations of friends and relations. You can use this technology without registering with any other services. In this connection, our highest concern with MobileWALK is data security. It is possible to install or activate links to well-known social networking services as plug-ins at a later date.
Shopping
Specifically for pedestrian navigation, MobileWALK offers information on the best places to go shopping. In the city centre above all, this service offers particular advantages. Things like opening hours, special offers and a virtual preview of products provide valuable enhancements to the usual offerings.
POI
MobileWALK offers a large number of Points of Interest (POIs). By linking to well-known content providers, this information is constantly updated and extended on a comprehensive basis. This makes searching for an Asian restaurant that is open at the moment as easy as looking for a public toilet.
Evacuation
By combining pedestrian navigation with Wireless LAN and GPS and its dynamic management of POIs, MobileWALK offers the perfect environment in an emergency. In this case, it is crucial for users to leave the danger areas as quickly as possible. The REPKA research project (http://fp-repka.de) is currently focusing on this topic. Within this project, MobileWALK is evaluation software and will be getting special newly developed components for the purpose.
